Made from atau Made of ?

Klo mau mengatakan "terbuat dari" itu pakai "made from" atau "made of"? Simak penjelasan berikut:

"Made from" digunakan apabila bahan dasar utk membuat berubah atau tidak kelihatan lagi bentuk bahan dasarnya. Contoh:
- Wine is made from grapes.
- Paper is made from wood.

"Made of" kebalikannya, bahan dasar yg digunakannya masih berujud atau masih tampak. Contoh:
- The chairs are made of wood.
(masih tampak bahan dasar "wood")
- The house is made of bricks.
(bahan "brick" masih tetap utuh meski sudah dilapisi semen)

Contoh lain:
1. This shirt is made of cotton.
2. The chair is made of leather.
3. The vodka is made from potatoes.
4. The tea is made from barley.
5. The watch is made of gold.

On Time vs. In Time

Masih bingung dg penggunaan "on time" & "in time"? Memang agak mirip sih. Keduanya berhubungan dg ketepatan waktu. Namun, "on time" cenderung digunakan utk yg berhubungan dg janji yg sudah dijadwalkan sebelumnya. Sedangkan "in time" lebih cenderung "pas pada waktunya", tidak terlambat & kejadian blum berakhir.

Utk lebih jelasnya, kita coba analisa contoh berikut:
1. The manager wants the meeting to start exactly on time.
2. Jim would have died if they hadn’t got him to the hospital in time.

Pada contoh 1, rapat pastinya sdh dijadwalkan & manajer ngga mau molor waktunya. Contoh 2, bukan sebuah janji yg terjadwal, tp Jim belum terlambat utk diselamatkan.

Contoh lain:
1. The bus was late this morning but it is usually on time .
2. The film was supposed to start at 8.30 but it didn't begin on time .
3. I like to get up in time  to have a big breakfast before going to work.
4. We want to start the meeting on time , so please don't be late.
5. I've just washed this shirt. I want to wear it this evening, so I hope it will be dry in time .
6. The train service is not very good. The trains are rarely on time.
7. I nearly missed my flight this morning. I got to the airport just in time.
8. I nearly forgot that it was Joe's birthday. Fortunately I remembered in time.
9. Why are you never on time? You always keep everybody waiting.
10. I got home in time to see the football match.

AM = pk. 00:00 - 12:00
PM = pk. 12:00 - 24:00

AM & PM itu dari bahasa Latin. AM singkatan dari "ante meridiem" yg artinya "before noon", sedangkan PM singkatan dari "post meridiem" yg artinya "after noon".

At Home vs. In The House

Apa bedanya "at home" & "in the house"?
"At home" bermakna rumah yg ditinggali atau tempat berteduh & istirahat setiap hari. Sedangkan "in the house" merujuk pd gedung atau bangunan. "Home" belum tentu "house".

Contoh:

- Don't worry, she is at home now.

- Jane is in the house now. The house is haunted.
("the house" bukan rumahnya Jane)

During vs. For

Keduanya termasuk preposisi yg dalam bahasa Indonesia sama-sama memiliki arti "selama". Perhatikan perbedaannya.

"for" diikuti durasi/periode waktu, contoh:
- We've lived here for ten years.
- He has studied for an hour.

"during" diikuti kata benda yg menunjukan sesuatu terjadi atau kejadian, contoh:
- He got drunk during the party.
- I was sleepy during the exam.

Among vs. Between

Coba perhatikan baik-baik.

"between" = di antara (dua)
- The office has two desks with a table between them.
- He stood between his mother and his father.

"among" = di antara (banyak)
- The ball was hidden among the leaves.
- The people of the town were frightened to think that a killer might be living among them.
